What Do Produce Stickers Say About Your Food?

What Do Produce Stickers Say About Your Food?

What Do Produce Stickers Mean?

Have you ever wondered what the numbers on produce stickers mean? As I became acutely aware of what I’ve been feeding my body, I began researching those mysterious numbers.

The stickers (PLU price lookup code) will tell you if the produce is organic or has been genetically modified.

Stickers that have five digits and begin with the number 8, are genetically engineered. This mean that the genes within the produce have been manipulated to produce bigger, more eye appealing food.

Stickers that have four digits and begin with the number 3 or 4 are conventionally grown, meaning the produce has been treated with chemicals, herbicides and fungicides.

Stickers that have five digits and begin with the number 9, means the produce has been grown organically without chemical manipulation.

Next time you are in the produce isle eyeing that luscious apple, consider for a moment how that piece of food was grown.

    1. Rajesh,
Your welcome. I believe it’s important to know where our food comes from and how it’s processed.

    1. Your welcome. I love going to farmer’s markets. In my area at least, I’ve discovered less food and more crafts at our FM’s.

Have you ever joined a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture)? I recently read about this through localharvest.org. I’m going to be looking into my local CSA, just hoping it’s not to late to sign up.

    1. Shayla,
I’m glad to hear you found this helpful. Food education is so important. It’s wonderful you are being mindful in what you feed your family.
